Why do I Need a Glare Filter?
Glare from light sources can produce strain on our eyes by forcing us to focus more intently on the documents viewed on the monitor. Evidence presented by independent laboratories documents the benefits of filter use. By cutting down on the glare associated with lighting issues, users can work for longer periods of time without ill effects. The acceptance of glare filters by the American Optometric Association (AOA) is further evidence as to the vision care benefits of glare filters.

What are the sizes of your glare filters?
We have a variety of sizes for standard monitor sizes ranging from 15 to 21 inches. We do not currently have any glare filters for widescreen models.

How do I know which filter will fit my monitor?
The size of a standard monitor is determined by measuring corner-to-corner diagonally. However, one needs to sometimes also consider the size of the plastic bezel around the monitor. Please reference the sizing charts that we have provided on the individual product detail pages.

Do I need to Adjust the Brightness of my Monitor When Using a Glare Filter?
Possibly. You may have to increase the brightness of the monitor slightly to compensate for any darkening caused by the glare device.

What is the difference between a glare filter and a privacy filter?
A glare filter minimizes glare and improves contrast by means of a multi-layered anti-reflective coating that is applied to the optical glass. Privacy and blackout filters provide one key additional functionality in that they blur or blacken the screen when it is viewed from an angle.

Why do some filters have a grounding wire?
Screen filters with a conductive layer can, if properly grounded, drain away the static field in front of the monitor, thereby preventing static shock and substantially reducing dust circulation. Many people confuse static electricity with controversial magnetic fields. Jargon in ads (H-field, E-field, VLF/ELF, etc.) helps perpetuate the incorrect idea that magnetic fields can be reduced by glare filters.

I used a mesh filter before but now most filters seem to be glass. What is the best material for a filter?
Black mesh was commonly used to make an excellent anti-reflection filter because reflections from mesh appear to be almost zero. However with today's high resolution CRTs and Flat Panel monitors a mesh filter would most likely create a visual interference pattern called Moire rings which make viewing information on the monitor especially difficult.

I have seen inexpensive glass filters at computer stores. Are these filters any good?
Usually the very cheap glass filters are made from uncoated, colored window glass. Although tinted glass will provide additional contrast, the reflection is actually made substantially worse and the user develops fatigue more quickly. Also, a ground cord attached to one of these filters is useless as there is no conductive material over the glass.

How do I clean my Glare Filter?
You can use a glass cleaning solution that does not include ammonia.

A glare screen can help relieve eye fatigue by reducing induced glare from overhead lighting and other sources.  However, a glare screen is only one part of the overall solution.  There are a number of other things that you can do to make your monitor friendlier to your eyes and your body.   We’ve listed some important ones below.

Adjust your monitor properly.
Center your monitor directly in front of your keyboard. The screen height should be positioned so that you the top of the screen is at eye level or a bit below so that you look down slightly at your work.  If it's too high or too low, it can lead to sore neck muscles (If you wear bifocal glasses, lower the monitor slightly to a reading level that accommodates your glasses.)  If your monitor cannot be adjusted, consider purchasing a monitor arm.

Reduce sources of glare.
Place the screen at right angles to windows, and adjust curtains or blinds to reduce glare.  Tilt the monitor slightly upward so that the base is closer to you than the top of the screen. Beware of tilting it back too much, as this may create glare from overhead lighting.  Adjust task lights so that their light is not reflected back from the screen.

Blink your eyes regularly.
Many people blink less than normal when working at a computer, which can result in dry, irritated eyes. Blinking produces tears that can help moisten and lubricate your eyes, so make a conscious effort to blink more often.

Adjust the brightness control on your monitor to its surroundings.
Focusing on the monitor for a long time with full brightness can cause headaches and eye fatigue.  Eliminate any contrast between the brightness of the screen and the area behind it by adjusting your monitor so that its brightness is approximately equal to the area behind it.

Adjust your font size and color.
The size of your text should be about two or three times the size of the smallest text that you can read. Black text on a white background is usually the easiest to see.

Use a document holder for reference materials.
Keep the screen and document holder (if you use one) at the same distance from your eyes, and as close to the monitor as possible.

Give your eyes a break.
Reduce eye fatigue by resting and refocusing your eyes periodically. Look away from your monitor and focus on something in the distance. Rest your eyes occasionally by covering them with your palms for 10-15 seconds.

Use the appropriate eyewear.
If you wear glasses or contacts, make sure the prescription is right for computer work and the distance of your computer from your eyes.  Glasses or contact lenses designed specifically for your time in front of a monitor may be a worthwhile investment.

Keep your monitor screen clean.
Monitors, especially CRT types, tend to develop electrostatic fields which attract dust.  Clean your monitor regularly.
