Cradling the phone between your head and your shoulder while you work can lead to shoulder, neck pain, headaches and muscle spasms. However, most of us are guilty of this seemingly minor ergonomic infraction! Below are some tips for proper phone usage to reduce the likelihood of experiencing discomfort.
Position your phone properly
While we advocate using hands-free headset, a standard phone may be acceptable if you spend little time on the phone while working. In either case, it’s important to locate the base within your normal reach zone, as repeated reaching too far for the phone can cause strain on the shoulder, arm, and neck.
Use a hands-free headsetIf your job involves manual tasks such as typing on a keyboard, always use a telephone with a "hands free" headset to avoid straining your neck and shoulder muscles while doing both tasks simultaneously. Holding a phone in your hand for an extended time can cause tense muscles and tendons in your fingers, arms and elbows. Your ear may also become sore from pressing the phone against it. Converting from a traditional hand-held phone to a hands-free headset brings back the natural curvature of the neck, and the difference in comfort level will be realized immediately.
Switch earsIf you do use a hands-free headset with a single earpiece, consider switching ears to eliminate any pain that may be caused by continuous pressure on only one ear.
Consider using a speakerphoneUsing a speaker phone permits hands-free telephone conversations, eliminating the risk of any pain discomfort or spasm associated with improper phone use. Note that while a speakerphone may be suitable for a Home office, they are often less than ideal for many work environments due to the lack of privacy. They also don't work well in noisy environments and the sound quality may be poor.
